This week met 1000 of Marvel Studio’s employees with a bitterness that much of Hollywood has tasted since the SAG/WGA strikes. According to DEADLINE, the superhero franchise mothership let go of about 8% of their workforce between the Los Angeles and New York offices (1).
Reports have stated that the layoffs were part of a company restructure. But this isn’t a matter of domestic cropping, it’s a matter of relocating company workforce in favor of subsidies, according to an article by the Daily Mail (2). Marvel is moving their productions across the pond, to the UK, where, thanks to Universal Healthcare, employee healthcare costs aren’t something they have to pay for.
This comes as unwelcome news amongst Hollywood workers as the industry has been intensely outsourcing their jobs since the economic downturn of 2020. Runaway productions as they’re called have existed since World War 2 when studios like MGM and Paramount began to film outside of California to avoid the high costs of labor. This is also when Europe began to financially incentivize productions, adding to the attraction for studios to migrate away from the Golden state.
According to the Wall Street Journal (3), Hollywood’s Job Market is Collapsing as it saw a sharp drop in Television productions over the last four years. The City of Angels saw 18,560 on-set production days in 2021 down to 6,582 in 2025. Commercials, Feature, Films, and Other Forms of Production also saw notable in set production days.
